Despite extensive media reports, would-be dog owners are still buying illegally imported puppies - and as Christmas approaches, the situation is set to get even worse as demand for puppies increases.  Eastern European gangs are smuggling thousands of puppies into the UK in appalling conditions - which frequently result in behavioural and health problems.  If the puppy falls ill it may involve thousands of pounds in vet bills to say nothing of the emotional heartbreak if the puppy dies.  How to avoid falling into the importers' traps?  Avoid any puppy with a rabies vaccination certificate (it's probably faked) and a "breeder" who can supply various breeds on demand, and insist on seeing the bitch with the puppies.  Here at the Canine Behaviour Centre we are so concerned at the problem that we are giving away free our booklet on How to Pick the Perfect Puppy ... For You.  If you are planning on getting a puppy for Christmas, then simply email us your address and we will send you advice on how to avoid the pitfalls of buying from illegal importers or puppy farmers.  And remember if you cannot get a puppy in time for Christmas, it's not the end of the world - the best things in life are always worth waiting for.
