The danger of cows Print E-mail

A family holiday in Northumberland over Easter ended in tragedy when a 61 year old grandmother was killed by a cow.  Almost certainly her death will not be the last in 2016 as about five people a year are killed by cows.  Unusually in this case the victim was not accompanied by a dog because cows are much more likely to kill or injure dog walkers.  Researchers from Liverpool University analysed 54 serious attacks by cows between 1993 and 2013 and found that walking with dogs, particularly when calves are present, was a common factor for an attack.  Some farmers erect signs asking for walkers to keep their dogs on leads when walking where cows are grazing but our advice is to let your dog off so that it can escape, thereby removing you, the owner, from the cows' attention.  But the best advice of all is: do not walk your dog through fields with cows...
