New legislation comes into force on April 6 requiring all dogs over eight weeks old to be microchipped.  Acording to DEFRA while 83% of owners have already chipped their dogs, around 1.45 million have not, facing a £500 fine if caught.  The law is designed to ensure that owners of dogs that attack people or other dogs can be traced as well as helping to reunite owners with their pets; last year the owners of more than 8,000 strays were successfully traced thanks to the chip.  Microchipping a dog at the vet costs between £10 and £30 but many charities like the Dogs Trust offer a free service.  For more information visit www.chipmydog.org.uk
