If you are travelling with your dog to Europe this summer or autumn, you need to be aware of leisihmaniasis: a potentially fatal infection caused by sandflies.  Despite the name, sandflies are not simply found on beaches but are prevalent in countries such as Spain, Italy, France and Greece and are starting to spread north; 2.5 million dogs in Europe are already infected with this parasite.  Until now, the only protection was a scalibor collar but now there is a vaccination.  The full vaccine course involves three injections given at three week intervals in the first year with a single annual booster vaccination.  It's worth talking to your vet...
